Language Planning and Policy: Global Perspectives, Local Realities Seminar

College of Languages, Literature and Culture, at Ziauddin University, held its First Language and Literature Seminar in collaboration with Society of Pakistan English Language Teachers (SPELT) entitled, Language Planning and Policy: Global Perspectives, Local Realities.

The seminar brought together renowned national and international English language experts and linguists, whose contributions greatly impacted the audience, students and teachers alike and left them with important points to ponder and few ideas for future actions.

Ziauddin University’s registrar, Engr. Capt. Syed Qasim Hussain, welcomed the esteemed guests and thanked them for taking part in this initiative.

Dr Fauzia Shamin, Dean Faculty of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences introduced the college and gave an insight into the seminar objectives.

Prof Hywel Coleman shared his vast and rich experience in the field of research in Sociolinguistics, Language Policy & Planning, and Language Education as well as his focus on Language & Development. Dr Judy Sharkey pointed out her work on Language & Literacy as well as research on how education integration and community-based field experiences affect teacher development and student learning. Dr Lucilla Lopriore highlighted her work on CLIL and EMI.

This was followed by a very interactive panel discussion, giving the audience a local context on the topics covered by international speakers.

Prof. Zakia Sarwar, Dr Sajida Zaki and Dr Bushra Khurram shared their experiences and observations in the field of; ELT/EFL/ESL, teacher development and learner engagement. The panel discussion was moderated by Sir Abbas Hussain. The participants were gripped by his precision of thought and his flawless stringing of the entire seminar discussions.

Ms Adeeba Ahmad, coordinator, College of Languages, Literature & Culture, thanked the audience for their presence, closing this thought provoking seminar. Surely, the event was a roaring success with discussions continuing over tea.
